Got My Martin Guitar Back/ Songwriter Demo Service

Well I got my guitar back. As I explained in the last post, I had to pawn it during a financial emergency. Things came down to the wire and I nearly lost it. If that had happened, this left handed guitar player would have been out of commission for quite a while. However instead of not being able to play the guitar for a while, I've gained some work. Here's how it happened.

I belong to a musician/songwriter forum and have been active for four years. Made a lot of friends and did some collaborations with other members. Some of the songwriters are not singers or musicians, so they can't demo their own songs. A demo is self explanatory. It's just a sample of how the song sounds, usually just a guitar/vocal or a piano/vocal recording that the songwriter sends to a publisher. The publisher then pitches the song to an artist so that they can make their own recording of the song. Demo's are for promotion purposes only and can't be sold as a commercial record. I got the bright idea to offer my services and make simple guitar/vocal demo's at a very temporary cheap rate so that I could get my guitar out of hock since the due date for payment was the next day. The response was overwhelming. The first day I made enough to pay the interest owed and prevent them from selling my guitar. By the third day, I made enough to actually get the guitar back, which I did.

I've got about 15 or so demo's to do over the next coming months. Most of the writers aren't ready yet so I have some time on my hands. I dusted off my recording equipment and I'm restudying recording techniques so I'm ready to go.

I would like to extend my offer to make a guitar/vocal demo to anyone who is reading this, has a song in mind, but needs a clean completed song of what you've written. This is not a co-write, so you must have a lyric and melody ready before I can record the demo. It's on a work for hire basis, so you own 100% of the copyright. The cost will be $50 for a basic vocal/guitar demo.

The process is easy. Send me an e-mail and let me know if you're interested. I can do any song in the folk genre, bluegrass, Americana, country, acoustic. You get the picture. I don't do techno, dance, hip hop, jazz etc. You can hear samples of my music by clicking Soundclick. Once we agree on a deal send $50 via the donate button on the side bar. E-mail me the lyrics. If you have basic recording capability on your computer, make a rough recording of the melody by either singing it, humming it, or picking it on the guitar strings and e-mail the file to me. Any way you can to convey the melody to me. We may have to use the telephone or Skype.

I hope to get some responses because this is a really good deal and the work will keep me off the streets. Thanks, Ben

  1. Hi Ben, thanks for your blog. I played guitar a bit back in college, and am thinking about getting back into it so I can play with my family and just have a good time. In college, I played a re-stringed right handed guitar, but I now have a decent Washburn right hander and am considering re-learning your way - the upside down way.

Your site is very helpful....I'll try to check back and let you know how it's going. Also, I wish you luck on the demo business! Sorry I don't have the need for this service myself...

  2. If a left handed person plays the left-handed instrument then nothing can go wrong. They can develop their talents that they have. But if they start the other way then often we never know, does it cause any extra complications to the pupil. Some of them have to change their way of playing later in life and some quit.
